Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the toll on the 92 bridge (San Mateo-Hayward)?
The 92 bridge is the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, which carries State Route 92 westbound from Hayward to San Mateo. The toll is a flat $8.50 with FasTrak, a License Plate Account, or invoice (the same price for every payment method in 2026). Carpools of 3 or more pay $4.25 during weekday commute hours, 5-10 AM and 3-7 PM, with a FasTrak Flex tag. Tolls are collected westbound only; the eastbound trip toward Hayward is free.
How much is the toll on the 84 bridge (Dumbarton)?
The 84 bridge is the Dumbarton Bridge, the State Route 84 crossing between Fremont and Menlo Park and the shortest bridge across San Francisco Bay. The toll is $8.50 for FasTrak, pay-by-plate, and invoice alike in 2026. Carpools of 3+ pay $4.25 weekdays 5-10 AM and 3-7 PM with FasTrak Flex. Tolls are collected westbound only.
Which Bay Area bridge is the most expensive?
The Golden Gate Bridge is the most expensive Bay Area toll bridge at $10.25 with FasTrak, $10.50 with a License Plate Account, or $11.25 by invoice (FY2026-27 schedule, effective July 1, 2026). The other seven state-owned bridges (Bay Bridge, Richmond-San Rafael, San Mateo-Hayward, Dumbarton, Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, and Carquinez) all charge a flat $8.50 since January 1, 2026, regardless of payment method.
Do all Bay Area bridges accept FasTrak?
Yes. All eight Bay Area toll bridges are fully electronic and accept FasTrak. None of them have cash toll booths. If you do not have FasTrak, the pay-by-plate system photographs your license plate and mails an invoice. On the Golden Gate Bridge, FasTrak saves $0.25 per crossing versus a License Plate Account and $1.00 versus the invoice rate. On the seven state-owned bridges all payment methods cost the same $8.50 in 2026; FasTrak becomes the cheapest option there from January 2027, when rates split into $9.00 FasTrak / $9.25 license plate / $10.00 invoice.
Which Bay Area bridges have carpool discounts?
All eight Bay Area toll bridges offer carpool discounts, and since January 1, 2026 every one of them requires 3 or more occupants. The Golden Gate Bridge carpool rate is $8.25 with a FasTrak Flex transponder and applies at all hours. The seven state-owned bridges charge carpools $4.25 (half the standard $8.50 toll) during weekday commute hours only, 5-10 AM and 3-7 PM, with a FasTrak Flex tag set to position 3 (a standard FasTrak tag qualifies at the Bay Bridge). That saves $4.25 per qualifying crossing.
Are Bay Area bridge tolls collected in both directions?
No. All Bay Area toll bridges collect tolls in one direction only, and the return direction is always free. The Golden Gate Bridge collects southbound (into San Francisco). The Bay Bridge, Richmond-San Rafael, San Mateo-Hayward, and Dumbarton bridges collect westbound. The three northern crossings collect heading away from the Bay Area core: the Carquinez Bridge eastbound toward Vallejo, the Benicia-Martinez Bridge northbound toward Benicia, and the Antioch Bridge northbound toward Sherman Island.
