Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bay Area bridge is the most expensive?
The Golden Gate Bridge is the most expensive Bay Area toll bridge at $8.75 with FasTrak or $9.75 with pay-by-plate. The other seven state-owned bridges (Bay Bridge, Richmond-San Rafael, San Mateo-Hayward, Dumbarton, Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, and Carquinez) all charge $7.00 with FasTrak or $8.00 with pay-by-plate during off-peak hours. The Bay Bridge charges $8.00 with FasTrak during peak commute hours.
Do all Bay Area bridges accept FasTrak?
Yes. All eight Bay Area toll bridges are fully electronic and accept FasTrak. None of them have cash toll booths. If you do not have FasTrak, the pay-by-plate system photographs your license plate and mails an invoice. FasTrak saves $1.00 per crossing on every bridge, so it pays for itself quickly if you cross any Bay Area bridge regularly.
Which Bay Area bridges have carpool discounts?
All eight Bay Area toll bridges offer carpool discounts with a FasTrak Flex transponder. The Golden Gate Bridge requires 3 or more occupants for a $5.75 rate. The other seven bridges require 2 or more occupants for a $2.50 rate during peak hours (and free during off-peak on some bridges). The carpool discount on the Bay Bridge alone saves $5.50 per crossing during peak hours.
Are Bay Area bridge tolls collected in both directions?
No. All Bay Area toll bridges collect tolls in one direction only. The Golden Gate Bridge collects southbound (into San Francisco). The Bay Bridge collects westbound (into San Francisco). Most other bridges collect in the direction heading toward the San Francisco side or southbound. The return direction is always free.
