Eligibility Requirements

3 or more occupants

The driver plus at least 2 passengers. Children of any age count. This is stricter than some Bay Area express lanes which allow 2+ occupants.

FasTrak Flex transponder

You need the Flex model (not the standard FasTrak). It has a physical switch with positions 1, 2, and 3. Set it to 3 before crossing. Free with a $25 prepaid account balance.

Switch set to 3 position

The toll system reads the switch position electronically. If your Flex tag is set to 1 (solo), you will be charged the standard $8.75 rate even if you have passengers.

How the FasTrak Flex Tag Works

The FasTrak Flex transponder has a physical switch on the front with three positions:

1
Solo driver
Standard FasTrak rate ($8.75)
2
2 occupants
HOV2 lanes (not GGB carpool)
3
3+ occupants
Carpool rate ($5.75 on GGB)

Important: On the Golden Gate Bridge, only position 3 qualifies for the carpool discount. Position 2 gets the standard rate. Always set to 3 when you have 3 or more people in the car.

Clean Air Vehicles

Qualifying clean air vehicles (electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell) with valid California Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) decals may be eligible for carpool-rate tolls on certain Bay Area bridges and express lanes. However, policies vary by bridge and are subject to change. Check with the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District for the most current CAV policy on the Golden Gate Bridge specifically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the carpool toll on the Golden Gate Bridge?
The carpool toll on the Golden Gate Bridge is $5.75 per crossing with a FasTrak Flex transponder set to the 3+ position. This saves $3.00 per crossing compared to the standard FasTrak rate of $8.75, and $4.00 compared to the pay-by-plate rate of $9.75. You must have at least 3 occupants in the vehicle to qualify for the carpool rate.
Do I need a special transponder for carpool on the Golden Gate Bridge?
Yes. You need a FasTrak Flex transponder, which has a physical switch with positions 1, 2, and 3. Before crossing with 3 or more occupants, set the switch to the 3 position. The toll system reads this setting and charges the carpool rate of $5.75 instead of the standard $8.75. A regular FasTrak transponder does not have this switch and will always be charged the standard rate.
What are the carpool lane hours on the Golden Gate Bridge?
The Golden Gate Bridge has a movable median barrier that shifts lane configuration based on traffic direction. During morning commute hours (approximately 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM), there are typically 4 lanes heading southbound and 2 northbound. During evening commute (approximately 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM), this reverses to 2 southbound and 4 northbound. The carpool toll rate of $5.75 applies at all hours, not just during peak commute times.
Can 2 people qualify for the carpool rate on the Golden Gate Bridge?
No. The Golden Gate Bridge requires 3 or more occupants for the carpool toll rate. This is different from some other Bay Area bridges and express lanes where 2 occupants may qualify during certain hours. On the Golden Gate Bridge, vehicles with only 2 occupants pay the full FasTrak rate of $8.75. Children of any age count as occupants.
