About the Benicia-Martinez (George Miller) Bridge
The Benicia-Martinez Bridge carries Interstate 680 across the Carquinez Strait, connecting Martinez in Contra Costa County on the south side to Benicia in Solano County on the north. It is one of two crossings of the strait, alongside the Carquinez Bridge on I-80 a few miles to the west, and is a major commute and freight artery linking the East Bay and Tri-Valley to Solano County and Sacramento.
The crossing is actually two parallel spans. The original 1962 truss bridge, officially the George Miller Jr. Memorial Bridge, now carries free southbound I-680 traffic along with a bicycle and pedestrian path. The newer 2007 span, the Congressman George Miller Benicia-Martinez Bridge, is a segmental concrete bridge that carries the tolled northbound traffic. The toll plaza sits on the south (Martinez) side and charges northbound traffic only; driving south from Benicia into Martinez is always free.
The bridge is operated by the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA), the agency that runs all seven state-owned Bay Area toll bridges. Tolls collected here go into the regional pot that funds bridge maintenance and Bay Area transportation projects.

Benicia-Martinez Bridge FAQ
How much is the Benicia-Martinez Bridge toll in 2026?
The Benicia-Martinez Bridge toll for a passenger car is $8.50 since January 1, 2026, the same price whether you pay with FasTrak or pay-by-plate (payment methods only get different prices from January 2027). The carpool rate is $4.25 with a FasTrak Flex transponder set to position 3 (three or more occupants), weekdays 5-10 AM and 3-7 PM. Tolls are collected northbound only, from Martinez toward Benicia on I-680. Southbound crossings into Martinez are free.
Which direction is tolled on the Benicia-Martinez Bridge?
Tolls are collected northbound only, on I-680 traffic heading from Martinez (Contra Costa County) toward Benicia (Solano County). The toll plaza sits on the south side of the bridge. Southbound trips from Benicia into Martinez are free. The bridge is actually two parallel spans: the 2007 northbound span (the Congressman George Miller Benicia-Martinez Bridge) carries the tolled traffic, while the original 1962 truss span now carries free southbound traffic plus the bicycle and pedestrian path.
Why is it called the George Miller Bridge?
Both spans honor Bay Area congressman George Miller and his father, state senator George Miller Jr. The original 1962 truss span is officially the George Miller Jr. Memorial Bridge, named for the state senator who represented Contra Costa County. The newer 2007 northbound span is officially the Congressman George Miller Benicia-Martinez Bridge, named for his son, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives. Most drivers and signage simply call the crossing the Benicia-Martinez Bridge.
Where does the Benicia-Martinez Bridge go?
The Benicia-Martinez Bridge carries Interstate 680 across the Carquinez Strait, connecting Martinez in Contra Costa County on the south to Benicia in Solano County on the north. It is one of the two main I-680 / I-80 corridor crossings of the strait (the Carquinez Bridge on I-80 is the other, a few miles to the west). The crossing is a major commute and freight route linking the East Bay and the Tri-Valley to Solano County, Sacramento, and points north.
Is the Benicia-Martinez Bridge cheaper than the Golden Gate?
Yes. The Benicia-Martinez Bridge charges a flat $8.50 in 2026, the same as the other six state-owned Bay Area bridges (Bay Bridge, Richmond-San Rafael, San Mateo-Hayward, Dumbarton, Carquinez, Antioch). Only the Golden Gate Bridge charges more ($10.25 FasTrak / $10.50 license plate / $11.25 invoice). The carpool rate is also lower on the state-owned bridges at $4.25, versus $8.25 for a Golden Gate carpool.
Can I avoid the Benicia-Martinez Bridge toll?
The toll is collected only northbound (Martinez toward Benicia), so southbound trips into Martinez are already free. To avoid the northbound toll, the nearest alternative crossing of the Carquinez Strait is the Carquinez Bridge on I-80 to the west, but it also charges $8.50, so there is no free way across the strait by car. For regular commuters, carpooling (3+ occupants, $4.25 during weekday commute hours) is the realistic way to cut the cost.
